 At Psychology Works we want to conduct our business in a way which considers the environmental, social and ethical impact that we can and do make collectively and individually. 

 

Corporate Social Responsibility covers a huge spectrum of issues in business, and we haven’t tackled all of them yet, but we are committed to moving in the right direction. We understand that whatever we do, however small, can help make a difference.

For the next 12 months our focus will be on three key areas where we believe we can make a small but noticeable difference. Firstly, in managing our environmental impact, secondly by supporting the next generation of Business Psychologists, and finally by contributing to initiatives concerned with making the world of work fairer, more inclusive and increasingly diverse. Here is what we are doing:

Managing our environmental impact.

Paper & recycling

We are working on reducing how much paper we use, and the amount of printing we do. When we do need to print on paper, we try to ensure all our paper is reused. We print on both sides, reuse scrap paper, and finally, when there is no room to scribble anymore ideas on it, we recycle it.  We are also committed to doing the same with other business consumables, such as printer cartridges, thoughtfully recycling, donating or responsibly disposing. We will also continue to use digital invoicing to further reduce the paper we use and the post we send.

Travel

The last couple of years have really shown us what is possible when it comes to using technology, such as email and video conferencing, as part of day-to-day business. Going forward we will continue to embrace the opportunities technology provides us with to reduce the number of journeys and therefore, our business carbon emissions from vehicles. We will also continue to prioritise use public transport over private vehicles, and where feasible encourage car sharing.

Giving back - supporting employability for Psychology graduates.

Getting that 'first job' after graduation is often not easy, no matter who you are or what business you are in. However, we also know that breaking into the business psychology industry is particularly tough, and we know that this is one area where we can make a difference.

For the next 12 months to support the employability and access to careers within the business psychology industry we will be:

  • Continuing our relationship with Manchester Metropolitan University to offer advice and guidance to students on business psychology as a career path, and running practical LinkedIn Skills training workshops for them

  • Updating and adding to the online resources our Founder, Maria Gardner has previously published on this topic, via her personal blog, Musings of an Occ Psych Geek

  • Participating in Careers events for Psychology students, and further contributing to NextGen activities being organised by the Association for Business Psychology

Diversity, equality and inclusion.

Events over the last year have really made us think about how much work there is to do in making the world a better and more equitable place, and specifically what we can do to make a difference. Our plans in this area is still evolving, but as a minimum over the next 12 months we commit to:

  • Revising and updating our Diversity & Inclusion Policy to make it more comprehensive

  • Continuing to build the diversity and inclusivity of our consulting and associate teams – and monitoring this to ensure we walk the talk

  • Actively supporting the work of the Black Business Psychology Network, who are working to increase awareness and visibility of black Business Psychologists based in the UK

  • Offering our experience and expertise to at least one initiative/charity in the form of mentoring support and/or employability skills training
